PSMJ Resources says that when it’s necessary to raise your fees, there are three ways to do it that cause least upset with clients.

First, start the process with new clients, and “test the waters.”

Second, with existing clients, start raising your fees only for special projects “e.g. a strip mall project for a client for whom you normally do warehouses.”

Third, with your major existing clients only roll out the new fee structure once you’re confident with it based on your “forays” above. Make sure you talk personally with these clients in advance of any increase so there are no surprises for them.
