Western Canadian-based McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. has been internationally recognized for the Veer Kunwar Singh Bridge project with a 2018 FIDIC Award of Merit, the only Canadian firm to receive a project award at the 2018 Awards ceremony.

Fédération Internationale d’Ingénieurs Conseils (FIDIC) is a global umbrella organization that represents the business and commercial interests of consulting engineering companies around the world. The award ceremony took place September 10 during the 2018 International Infrastructure Conference in Berlin.

In total there were 22 projects short-listed for FIDIC Awards this year, two projects from China (a hydro power station and a high-speed railway) received Outstanding Project of Year awards, while an expressway project from China and the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in the U.S. garnered Awards of Special Merit.

The Canadian firm provided conceptual & detailed design, construction engineering, and site-support to the contractor for the $200M design/build project. The team also found an innovative way to meet the owner’s goal of cutting construction duration by a year, to make an iconic statement, and to overcome significant technical site challenges.

“The Veer Kunwar Singh Bridge is the world’s longest extradosed bridge, and a project dear to McElhanney’s heart; for its technical complexity which allowed our team to show the world their expertise and for the incredibly positive effect it has had on the people and economy of northern Bihar. We sincerely thank FIDIC for recognizing this project and sharing its story with our industry,” said Allan Russell, President and CEO of McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. in a company release.
