SNC-Lavalin has a contract to design, build, operate and maintain a workforce lodge for 2,500 workers at the oils ands in Fort McMurray Alberta. The construction — which is under way — includes site preparation, water treatment facilities and back-up power. The company will work with the Fort McMurray First Nation on the operations and maintenance contract. R.V. Anderson won two Project of the Year Awards from the Ontario Public Works Association. The two projects are both in Sudbury. One is the Levack and Onaping Water Supply project which involved optimizing $18.5 million worth of new infrastructure, including a booster station, new wells, and 6.6 kilometres of water mains that cross the Onaping River. The second project is the Sudbury South End Sewage Rock Tunnel, a $31-million project that constructed a 6.5 kilometre rock tunnel sewer system. A $90-million expansion of the city of Toronto’s Milliken Reservoir and Pump station located in York Region was designed by Associated Engineering. Construction is well under way on a new reservoir that will double the capacity of the existing reservoir to 268 million litres. There is also over a kilometre of large diameter watermain and six new valve changers and a new pump station. Work is under way and should be completed by 2012. Delcan has entered a strategic partnership with CheckMark Vehicle Services of Virginia in the U.S. CheckMark provides periodic inspection programs and consulting on safety and security compliance for commercial vehicles. Sasol Technology of South Africa, which produces transport fuels from coal and other chemicals, has appointed Hatch as one of its two preferred licensors for the Sasol Fixed Dry Bottom (FBDB) Gasification Technology. Hatch will help optimize Sasol’s existing coal-based gas production operations and help develop the technology. Stantec raised $92,000 in its Movember campaign, surpassing its goal of $50,000 by a wide margin and placing the company in the top five fundraising teams from across the U.S. and Canada. In the Movember movement, which is growing in popularity, men grow moustaches for the month of November to raise funds for prostate cancer. Architects Moriyama and Teshima of Toronto won the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture for its work on the Wadi Hanifah in Saudi Arabia. The project includes a bioremedation facility that treats 400,000 cubic metres of urban sewage from the city of Riyadh. Moriyama and Teshima was in joint venture with U.K.-based engineers Buro Happold on the project, which is believed to be the largest environmental restoration of its kind.
