The Thermal Insulation Association of Canada (TIAC) has partnered with the Midwest Insulation Contractors’ Association (MICA) to bring a national standards manual to Canada.

The new North American Commercial and Industrial Insulation Standards (NACIIS) Manual, now available for purchase, is reportedly Canada’s only standards manual for mechanical insulation. Its development came about after TIAC’s ‘innovators group’ realized in 2017 there were key similarities between its own Best Practices Guide (BPG) and MICA’s National Commercial and Industrial Insulation Standards manual.

“It was obvious we had to think of a partnership with our neighbours to the south,” says Luis Garcia, the group’s chair, “and thus started the conversation about creating a U.S./Canada manual.”

TIAC finalized an agreement with MICA to endorse the manual as its ninth edition late last year. Intended for engineers, designers, contractors and owners, the NACIIS Manual contains updated information related to the design, specification and installation of thermal insulation on piping, fittings, ductwork, equipment and vessels within commercial heating, ventilating, cooling and plumbing systems.

While the manual is currently only available in English, the next phase of TIAC’s agreement with MICA is to translate it into French.
