Electromechanical engineering firm Hedgehog Technologies, based in Burnaby, B.C., has introduced the Nimba Microgrid Controller Solution to help optimize microgrid-powered communities.

To help extend the life of assets while reducing costs and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Nimba manages energy through peak shaving and demand response events. The system is interoperable with a variety of renewable energy systems and communications protocols, including energy storage converters, photovoltaic (PV) solar inverters, power meters and protection relays.

“Some of our earliest projects involved microgrids and now we are witnessing widespread applications,” says Hedgehog founder Michael Wrinch. “Nimba is designed to make energy management accessible for remote communities that are not connected to a main power grid.”

Nimba’s alarm handling capabilities alert users with email notifications during emergencies. During a blackout period, the controller communicates with the battery storage system to ensure lights stay on.
