Marshall Macklin Monaghan of Toronto started off the new year with two new partners. One is Phil Bastow, P. Eng., manager of mechanical engineering. He is a graduate of Memorial University, Newfoundland and after stints with other consulting firms in Toronto and Edinburgh, joined Marshall Macklin Monaghan in 1996. His projects include the National Trade Centre in Toronto and airports in Budapest and Myanmar. Rick Muzyk, P.Eng., manager of structural engineering, has also been made a partner. He has 25 years experience and joined the firm last year His projects include the Fredericton-Moncton toll road and Toronto Pearson airport’s infield development.

New associate partners at the firm are Adolfo Emer, P.Eng., who joined the firm in 1988 after graduating from the University of Toronto, Rod McLeod, B.Sc. who came from the Greater Toronto Airports Authority in 1997, and Tom Rotella, P.Eng. who joined the firm in 1986 after graduating from McMaster University.

The 1998 Robert F. Legget Award for Excellence in Geotechnical Engineering was presented to Delwn George Fredlund, PH.D Edmonton in October. Since 1966 Dr. Fredlund has taught at the University of Saskatchewan, and was head of the Department of Civil Engineering there from 1989-1995. He has also worked with many consulting firms and government agencies including a stint with R.M. Hardy and Associates in Edmonton.

Giffels Associates of Toronto has appointed Michael LeGresley, P.Eng. vice-president of design build, to be on its board of directors. Bruce Pickersgill, P.Eng. has been made a vice-president, responsible for the Abu Dhabi and Dubai offices, and Wally Lachmaniuk, P.Eng. is now head of the infrastructure group. Tony Solimine, P.Eng. has become vice-president of construction management, and Dave Barrington, P.Eng. is assistant director of project management.
