Consulting engineers Morrison Hershfield of Toronto have been selected to engineer and manage the fixed wireless portion of the Alberta SuperNet. The company is providing its services to Axia SuperNet which is building the rural portion of the Alberta project. When it’s completed, the Alberta SuperNet will be a high-speed, high capacity, fibre-optic and fixed wireless broadband network linking provincial offices, schools, hospitals and libraries in more than 400 communities in the province.
The fixed wireless portion will include approximately 130 heavy route microwave links and 210 fixed wireless local access links in municipalities.
The Alberta SuperNet is believed to be the largest microwave network under construction in North America. Funded partially by a $193 million investment from the Government of Alberta, and $102 million by prime contractor Bell Intrigna and Bell Nexxia, the network is expected to be completed by 2004.
Morrison Hershfield provides multidisciplinary engineering and management services to public and private sector clients across North America. Founded in 1946, the firm is employee-owned. The firm’s Calgary office is in charge of the project. Visit www.albertasupernet.ca, www.supernetportal.com, www.morrisonhershfield.com
