Delayed school projects in Alberta being investigated

Alberta’s Education Minster, David Eggen, expressed shock last week when he discovered that construction of more than half of 197 new school buildings was behind schedule. A full 70 per cent of the schools are more than a year delayed.
The province’s auditor general has been asked to find out what is causing the delays, including looking at the construction process and timelines, and how to prioritize projects.
Reportedly most of the schools badly affected are in Calgary and Edmonton, and include buildings for the public and Catholic school boards.
The NDP government is initially blaming the previous PC governments of Alison Redford and Jim Prentice for making unrealistic promises.
In a report in the Edmonton Journal, Eggen said of the delays: “This news will no doubt surprise, disappoint and even anger parents, students, teachers across the province. I feel the same way. We must do better. Alberta families have been waiting a long time for these schools.”
