Haiti road and spectacular Shanghai pavilion among winners of Quebec consulting engineering awards

The Association of Consulting Engineers of Quebec (AICQ) held its annual awards – the Grands Prix du génie-conseil Québécois – on Friday, April 1st. The celebrations were held at the Science Centre in Montreal, with nearly 330 engineers and their guests in attendance. The awards, which are also known as the “Leonards,” are now in their 9th year.

The Prix Visionnaire (Visionary Award), which is the jury’s favourite, recognizes a project in terms of its innovation, audacity or proactiveness. This year the award went to young engineer Philippe Larouche, ing. of SNC-Lavalin (LGL S.A.) in Haiti, for studies and work supervision on making a 12-kilometre former footpath in the mountains into a road suitable for carrying vehicles. The road gives the local underprivileged people access to health care, education and markets. AICQ says the project shows the benefits that consulting engineering can have on people’s quality of life.

Julie Archambault of CIMA+ was awarded the “Emerging Consulting Engineering Professional Award.” It  recognizes a young engineer with fewer than five years’ experience for the execution of a project.

Skating rink at Marcel Dutil Arena, Saint-Gédéon-de-Beauce – Roche ltée (buildings, mechanical-electrical category);

Raymond-Lévesque Library, Saint-Hubert à Longueuil – SNC-Lavalin (buildings, structural category)

Upgrades to Hydro-electric Station, Hull-2, Ottawa River — CIMA+ (energy category )

Weirs on Rupert River, James Bay – AECOM (environment category )

Modernisation of Quebec City Incinerator – AECOM (industry category )

Bridge at la Petite-Nation, Highway 50, Lochaber, Ottawa – CIMA+ (transport infrastructure category )

Magog River Gorge, town of Sherbrooke – Groupe S.M. International (urban infrastructure category)

Canada Pavilion, Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China – SNC-Lavalin (international category)

Repair of Moreau culvert, Gatineau – Julie Archambault, ing. jr.,  CIMA+, (consulting engineering category)

Control and management of electrical power in Marlborough, Massachussetts for Brookfield Renewable Power – BBA inc.  (telecommunications and new technologies category).
