Fredericton Bridge to be refurbished

SNC-Lavalin has been given the contract to do the engineering, procurement and construction of a project to rehabilitate the Princess Margaret Bridge in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
The 2-lane bridge is over a kilometre long and was built in 1957 to cross over the Saint John River and bypass Fredericton. Its structure has deteriorated to a degree that in November 2009 its weight limit had to be reduced to 43,500 kg. Hillside Consulting Engineers of Fredericton are helping with the project.
The work will include removing and replacing the bridge deck, as well as refurbishing the structural steel work and capping the bridge piers.
Construction is beginning immediately and is set to be completed in December 2011. The bridge will then be restored to its original carrying weight of 62,500 kg.
