Cogeneration assessments now part of government’s free software

Natural Resources Canada, a department of the federal government, has adapted the RETScreen software for assessing renewable energy project proposals to apply to cogeneration projects.
Available free of charge, the software can be used to evaluate energy production, life-cycle costs and greenhouse gas emission reductions for most renewable energy technologies.
The new RETScreen Combined Heat and Power Project Model for cogeneration can be used for various processes, including power, heating and cooling. It can be applied to single or multiple buildings, industrial processes, and district heating and cooling. The range of fuels covers everything from landfill gas to biodiesel to coal.
The RETScreen software was created at Natural Resources Canada’s CANMET Energy Technology Centre in Varennes, Quebec in 1998. Since then teams of engineers from government, industry and academia have been upgrading and expanding its capabilities. It is backed by the United Nations and the World Bank and considered the global standard for analyzing energy projects.
