A New Jersey company known as Global Resource Corp has developed a microwave method and machinery to convert large amounts of industrial waste materials into diesel, methane, carbon ash and other reusable hydrocarbons.
A demonstration of the commercial prototype, Patriot-1, transformed large amounts of scrap tires into fuel. The process is also said to be capable of processing shale rock, tar sands, bituminous coal, heavy oil and municipal waste and tanker sludge.
The technology will have an energy efficiency of 1:50, a ratio to ensure its economic viability, and is emission-free.
