Hemlock Valley resort expansion approved in B.C.

The B.C. government has approved a $1.5-billion expansion of the Hemlock Resort in the Fraser Valley.
The five-phase expansion is to take place over 60 years, but will eventually see the all-season resort increase its controlled area to more than 6,000 hectares from 350 hectares now. The existing ski hill will be expanded there are plans for a lakefront First Nations-themed residential village and small marina over the next 20 years. Eventually there will be approximately 20,000 accommodation units and 23 new lifts.
The expansions are being called a “collaborative and innovative approach” between the government, the developer, Berezan Group of Langley, and local Sts’ailes Band. An impacts benefit agreement between them includes opportunities for development on nearby Harrison Lake. They have agreed to reduce impacts on existing forest licences in the area.
Phase 1 is expected to create the equivalent of more than 1,000 full time jobs.
