Waterloo Region previews new LRT documentary

The documentary will showcase the Region’s decision to build light rail transit and the transformative impact the project has had on its community.

Although the four-year light rail transit project is not yet completed, the Region of Waterloo in southwestern Ontario has released a trailer for “Growing Up: The Story of ION Light Rail in Waterloo Region” an upcoming feature length documentary.

The documentary will showcase the Region’s decision to build light rail transit and the transformative impact the project has had on its community.

“We have a strong history here in the Region of planning for the future, of making the right decisions to ensure we leave behind a community that is economically sound for future generations,” said councillor Tom Galloway, Chair of the Region of Waterloo’s Planning and Works Committee. “ION light rail is already a major part of Waterloo Region’s story, and this documentary captures that narrative.”

The ION LRT  is a P3 project was awarded to the GrandLinq team in 2014, with AECOM serving as the design lead, responsible for the detailed design, including track, civil, utilities, architecture, structural, landscape, systems and environmental services.

The LRT is expected to start running in Spring 2019. No release date was announced for the full documentary.
