Funding for small harbour upgrades announced

The federal government has announced that it will spend $57 million on upgrades for small craft harbours around Canada.

The federal government has announced that it will spend $57 million on upgrades for small craft harbours around Canada.

The program, announced by Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, was made in Cormierville, New Brunswick on August 5.

The federal government will cooperate with the local harbour authorities to undertake the projects, which will take place in over 135 fishing harbours. They will include, maintenance, repairs and dredging.

Minister Ashfield said:  “Our Government is committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability and prosperity of the fishing industry across Canada.  We know that this industry is a major economic driver for many communities in this country and they depend on having infrastructure in place to support our fishermen and women.”
