Shellmouth Dam in Manitoba to be rehabilitated

At the end of December, the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba announced they will commit $8 million to water management issues on the Assiniboine River.
The cost-sharing agreement will provide $4 million for improvements to the Shellmouth Dam, about 300 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, near the town of Russell.
The funds will help bolster water supplies and improve flood control.
Another $4 million will be spent to compensate upstream landowners for past damages from flooding.
Work on the dam is not expected to begin before 2005, but public consultations are under way and preliminary engineering studies are being done by TetrEs (Mike McKernan) and KGS Consulting (David McMillan) of Winnipeg.
The dam was built under the auspices of the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration in 1970, and the same federal department is overseeing the new project.
