About 230 migrating ducks landed on a tailings pond at Syncrude’s Mildred Lake facility in northern Alberta on October 25. Government investigators found that warning canons were working, but the ducks landed anyway. It’s believed they were exhausted after flying through freezing rain.
Just a few days earlier, Syncrude had agreed to pay a $3 million penalty after being found responsible for the deaths of 1,600 ducks who flew into one of its tailing ponds in 2008.
