At the first Japan Space Elevator Conference in Tokyo, engineers from around the world hailed a new device as the solution to their problems — a lightweight cable strong enough to carry the elevator cab from earth to a counterweight in space.
The Institute of Electrical Engineers reports that the cable is being developed with the help of NASA and might be ready by 2030.
