The Montreal Port Authority has unveiled plans to expand the port in a 12-year, $2.5 billion development.
Presented April 17, and called “Vision 2020,” the plan will triple the port’s container traffic over four phases. The port would eventually be able to handle 4.5 million containers.
The plan includes a $150-million scheme to redevelop the Alexandra Pier in Old Montreal as a tourism hub to attract more cruise ships.
Proceeding with the plan depends on securing investment from the federal government and the private sector.
Residents in Montreal’s east end are showing some resistance, arguing it will take away green space along the St. Lawrence River.
