The Ontario budget reinforces the province’s recent commitment to renewable energies, following the enactment of the Green Energy Act, 2009. The government expects to create 50,000 jobs in this sector thanks partly to its first comprehensive feed-in tariff (FIT) program which pays renewable energy generators for the electricity they produce under long-term contracts.
The Ontario Power Authority is administering the FIT program and on March 10 announced it had issued the first 510 FIT contracts totaling 112 megawatts. The projects are being built in 120 communities. About 95 per cent of them are for solar generation.
