Report paints first picture of Canadian ground source heat pump sector

The Canadian Geo-Exchange Coalition (CGC) has released a statistical report showing that the market for ground source heat pumps grew 60% annually in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009 the market grew by 5%.

The Canadian Geo-Exchange Coalition (CGC) has released a statistical report showing that the market for ground source heat pumps grew 60% annually in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009 the market grew by 5%.

Entitled, “The State of the Canadian Geothermal Heat Pump Industry 2010 – Industry Survey and Market Analysis,” the report is the first document to give a comprehensive view of the Canadian industry.

According to the statistics, closed horizontal loops dominate residential installations – 52% in 2009. The second largest market segment is closed, vertical loops (34%) in 2009.

The manufacturing of ground source heat pumps is dominated by the United States, with three companies capturing 82% of the market. Of the top 10 brands, only three are manufactured in Canada.

The Coalition also undertakes training in the systems and has so far trained 125 commercial system designers.
