Ontario Power Generation (OPG) subsidiary PowerON Energy Solutions has selected consulting engineering firm EXP to support the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) electrification program, which targets a near zero-emissions fleet by 2040.

PowerON is responsible for the electrification of eight TTC bus garages over the next 15 years, including designing, building, operating and maintaining all electrical infrastructure, from substation grid connections to pantographs (i.e. bus rooftop devices that connect to overhead charging systems). EXP will support PowerON by providing engineering services, equipment specifications, material details, testing and commissioning for the project’s feasibility study and conceptual design stages.

“Our team is proud to work on a project that builds the foundation for a more sustainable public transportation system in Toronto,” says Svetan Veliov, P.Eng., EXP’s vice-president (VP) for buildings.

With more than 2,000 buses, the TTC has Canada’s largest fleet of public transit vehicles. PowerON will address the entire life-cycle of systems to ensure efficient power delivery to its electric buses.
