EXP, Convertus Group and Ainsworth subsidiary Énergere are playing leading roles in the construction of a new, large-scale biomethanization plant in Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Que.
The team will design, build, finance and operate (DBFO) the waste-to-energy processing plant under a 20-year contract. The plant will process organic food waste from residential sources to output renewable natural gas (RNG) and compost.
Specialists from EXP’s industry, buildings, energy transition, infrastructure, Earth and environment businesses will collaborate to design plans and specifications for the plant, drawing on their expertise in renewable energy production systems.
“At the plant, organic matter will be processed using tunnel treatment,” explains Stéphane Chabot, director of EXP’s industry business. “This two-stage process recovers organic matter that could not be converted to gas via biomethanization in the first stage and turns it into compost. The technique is common in Europe, but not yet widely used in North America.”
The first stage of the project is scheduled to start by March 2025, with commissioning of the industrial facility scheduled for September 2026.
