International consulting engineering firm Arup, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Canada, will lead design for the development phase of the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station capacity improvement project.

The TTC has awarded a contract for the $1-billion-plus project’s next phase to the Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture (KMJV), with Arup serving as lead design partner. KMJV and the TTC will collaborate to ensure the station—a hub where Toronto’s busiest subway lines converge—will be able to accommodate an expected surge in passenger traffic in the coming years.

The project will involve building a new Line 2 passenger platform for eastbound service, expanding the Line 1 northbound and southbound passenger platforms, adding a new accessible entrance on the south side of Bloor Street East, mechanical and electrical provisions and refurbishments (including a multi-level electrical building, subway ventilation fans and associated housing) and utilities relocation.

The progressive contract will see KMJV enter a two-year development phase and work with the TTC to develop a design, schedule, methodology and target price proposal for construction.

“Bloor-Yonge station is located directly below our office in Toronto, making this project especially meaningful for our team,” says Arup principal Omid Nakhaei.
