Union Bay, BC, water treatment plant moving forward

Union Bay Improvement District worked with Koers Engineering to develop and design a new treatment plant that meets provincial standards.
The Union Bay Improvement District (UBID) provides water service to 690 properties in an area about 100km north of Nanaimo on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
The UBID has received approval to move ahead with its Langley Lake water treatment plant project, including approval from Island Health for the water supply system construction permit, and building permit approvals from the Comox Valley Regional District.
The UBID has awarded the contract for construction of the new water treatment plant to Comox Valley-based Ridgeline Mechanical Ltd.
Water drawn from Langley Lake currently only receives chlorination and is not compliant with the provincial surface water quality treatment objectives guideline.
UBID worked with Koers Engineering to develop and design a new treatment plant that meets provincial standards. The project is comprised of four components:
- Installation of a new water filtration system (dissolved air flotation tank and multi-media filtration)
- Construction of a new building to house water treatment equipment
- Construction of a new glass-fused steel water reservoir
- Installation of new water main and tie-ins
The water treatment plant construction is slated to begin in June, with project completion expected in early 2020.
