J. L. Richards wins top Ontario award

Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) gave its annual awards on June 10 following the association’s annual meeting at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario.
The top award, called the Willis Chipman Award, went to J. L. Richards & Associates Ltd. for its role in upgrading the Ravensview Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kingston, Ontario.
J. L. Richards provided project management, engineering, architectural and planning services for the extensive upgrade to the facility. The project involved adding BAF (biological aerated filters) technology, enhancing the quality of the plant’s effluent, and increasing the plant’s capacity by 30%. The $115-million project was completed in late 2009, six months ahead of schedule and 10% under budget.
The other awards were selected in categories designated by the size of the company.
For companies with 1 to 25 employees, an Award of Excellence went to Quad Engineering for “Hot Rolling of Titanium Ingots – a New Process.”
For firms with 26 to 100 employees, an Award of Excellence went to DST Consulting Engineers for “Green Ground Improvement of a Brownfield in Thunder Bay.”
For firms with 101+ employees, an Award of Excellence went to Dillon Consulting Limited for “Walker Road CPR Grade Separation, Windsor.”
Awards of Merit went to the following:
Sigmund Soudack & Associates Inc. for “The Absolute” apartment building; Stantec Consulting for “Sandy Hill Flood Control & Park Rehabilitation” in Ottawa; Simulent Inc. for “Modelling Epoxy Lining Procedure in Pipe Lining”; Delcan Corporation with McCormick Rankin Corporation for “Ontario’s Action Plan for the Intelligent Border Crossing”; and URS Canada Inc. for the “Detroit River International Crossing.”
