Environment Canada is taking comments on its proposed Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations until May 19, 2010. The proposed regulations were published in Canada Gazette, Part 1 on March 20, 2010. They would apply to any wastewater system that has a capacity to deposit a daily volume of effluent of 10 cubic metres or more from its final discharge point and that deposits a deleterious substance to surface water. The proposals are not being applied to systems located in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and north of the 54th parallel in the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Discharges from separate storm sewer systems are also not covered under the proposed Regulations given these are not wastewater systems.
