ADVANCE: Women in Engineering is a virtual event that promotes gender equity, diversity and inclusion in Canada’s engineering sector.

Hosted by Canadian Consulting Engineer, this year’s event will spotlight the accomplishments of successful female professional engineers and encourage more women to join the industry. An inspiring keynote presentation will be followed by two dynamic panel discussions.

11:30 am – 11:35 am

Host: Peter Saunders, editor, Canadian Consulting Engineer

Keynote Address

Speaker: Catherine Karakatsanis, COO, Morrison Hershfield

12:05 pm – 12:15 pm

Session #1: Welcoming Women to the Profession

Moderator: Jeanette Southwood, VP of corporate affairs and strategic partnerships, Engineers Canada

  • Jenny Lines, project management division manager, McElhanney
  • Lisa Miller-Way, code engineering manager, LRI Engineering
  • Emily Secnik, civil engineer-in-training (EIT), Dillon Consulting
As the engineering industry sets goals for higher rates of participation by women, one of the keys to success in this endeavour will be to ensure its workplaces are welcoming environments that not only attract young female engineers-in-training (EITs), but also mentor them and foster further professional growth. Our panelists will share their personal experiences and industry insights.

1:15 pm – 1:25 pm

Session #2: Different Paths to Career Satisfaction

Moderator: Joanna Kervin, VP of external approvals and implementation, Crosslinx Transit Solutions

  • Judy Tse, interim chief engineer and executive director of engineering and construction services, City of Toronto
  • Stacia Van Zetten, CSO and co-founder, Exact Technology
  • Montana Wilson, CEO and founder, Grit Engineering
Many of Canada’s consulting engineers join a firm early in their career and stay with it as they grow in their profession, which is a testament to the dynamism of such firms. Others, however, take a different or more varied path, such as working for a municipal or provincial entity or running their own business as an entrepreneur. Our panelists will explore such options for women in engineering.

2:25 pm – 2:30 pm
Closing Remarks

Host: Peter Saunders, editor, Canadian Consulting Engineer
