Toronto adding six new GO/SmartTrack stations and Ottawa's LRT Stage 2 gets $50M boost.
The province of Ontario has announced it reached a milestone with the City of Toronto in the integrated GO Regional Express Rail (RER)/SmartTrack project that will add six new GO/SmartTrack stations in the city, and the province will be contributing up to $50 million to the construction of a 3.4 km extension of the Trillium line, the next phase of Ottawa’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.
The six GO/SmartTrack stations will be: Finch-Kennedy and Lawrence-Kennedy on the Stouffville corridor; Gerrard-Carlaw and East Harbour on the Stouffville/Lakeshore East corridor; and King-Liberty and St. Clair-Old Weston on the Kitchener corridor, with construction to be completed by 2025.
The new Ottawa extension will lead to a new terminus station near Limebank Road in Ottawa’s Riverside South community.
The new Ottawa funding is in addition to the more than $1 billion Ontario has already invested in the Stage 2 LRT project.
Jointly funded by Canada, Ontario and the City of Ottawa, the Stage 2 project will add over 40 km of light rail and 24 new stations by extending the nearly complete Confederation Line to the east and west and the Trillium Line to the south, including a spur to the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.
Preliminary construction on the Stage 1 Confederation Line began in April 2013, and the line is expected to be in service in 2018.
Construction on Stage 2 LRT will begin following the completion of the Confederation Line and is expected to be fully in service by 2023.
