Hatch Mott MacDonald has been awarded the contract from the Toronto Transit Commission to design the tunnel for the new Scarborough subway. The company is also playing a key design role on the Toronto York-Spadina subway extension, and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which are both currently under construction.
The Scarborough subway will extend the Danforth line 7.5-kilometres north east to Scarborough Town Centre. The route is currently served by an aging rapid transit line dating from 1985 and became a key political issue in 2013 under the city’s colourful former mayor Rob Ford. Originally the TTC planned to build a replacement LRT. However, Rob Ford championed a subway line and, after much public debate, Toronto council approved the more expensive option in October 2013.
Work on an environmental assessment for the line has already begun. Current plans are for the line to have three stations. URS is doing the environmental assessment, with HMM input on some decisions.
