YVAM aims to cool data centres more efficiently

Compared to traditional air-cooled screw chillers, Johnson Controls’ new York variable-speed air-cooled magnetic-bearing (YVAM) centrifugal chiller is designed to improve efficiency in typical data centre applications by 49%.
The YVAM operates with R-1234ze, an ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant, and without oil to help reduce routine maintenance. It is designed for hyper-scale and co-location data centre cooling needs.
With its magnetic-bearing technology, the YVAM can work efficiently at low lift conditions, with no need for free cooling coils to perform similarly to air-cooled chillers with integral water-side economizers. It uses a variable-speed drive with active front end to reduce energy consumption and total harmonic distortion.
To help ensure non-stop cooling, the YVAMß features quick-start technology with an integral uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup, which allows it to return to full load in as little as three minutes after power is restored.
