Danfoss VTCA400 compressor

Danfoss’ Turbocor VTCA400 compressor has been named a winner for the 2022 AHR Expo Innovation Awards in the cooling category.

The annual competition honours inventive and original products, systems and technologies showcased at the expo; other categories include building automation, green building, heating, indoor air quality (IAQ), refrigeration, ventilation, plumbing, software, tools and instruments. The 2022 expo will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, and there will be a formal ceremony for the award winners.

The VTCA400 is reportedly the world’s first oil-free, variable-speed, magnetic bearing centrifugal compressor, with a hybrid compression design optimized for use with low-global-warming-potential (low-GWP) refrigerant R-1233zd in water-cooled chiller applications. Its patent-pending design features a combination mixed flow and radial impellers, to enhance performance within a compact footprint, weighing up to 50% less than traditional designs and freeing up mechanical room space.

For chiller manufacturers, the VTCA400 offers lower costs, greater part-load efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, improved serviceability and more redundancy, as they can place multiple compressors on one chiller.
