Emerson Climate Technologies Unveils 2015 Environmental Initiatives

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 16, 2014 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and a leader in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration industry, today announced its 2015 environmental stewardship initiatives during a White House meeting of industry and government leaders in Washington.

Joining a roundtable discussion that included top energy officials from the Administration, Ed Purvis, Emerson executive vice president and head of the Climate Technologies unit, described the company’s longstanding role in helping the global heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Its efforts include transitioning away from refrigerants detrimental to the ozone, and raising air conditioning and refrigeration equipment energy efficiency.

“Emerson is proud to be among the businesses here today leading these important issues and developing technologies that are not only more energy efficient, but also decrease global warming potentials (GWP),” Purvis said. “Our pledge to lower GWP and increase efficiency in many of our products can be seen in our new initiatives and investments throughout the next year.”

In 2015, Emerson will dramatically expand its line of products using carbon dioxide, a natural and energy-efficient refrigerant. This new carbon dioxide line will be the most complete in the industry and include compressors, flow controls, discrete electronic devices and system electronic controls.

Continuing its leadership in developing low-GWP technologies, Emerson will launch a full line of compressors and controls approved with refrigerants that are 50 percent lower in GWP compared to today’s options for refrigeration applications. The company also plans to roll out new Copeland Scroll™ compressors for supermarkets and convenience stores. These compressors are 15 percent more efficient than existing ones, and will be compatible with low-GWP refrigerants. In addition to new products, Emerson’s commitment to modulation and its award-winning variable speed technology has led to a significant increase in energy efficiency and indirect decrease in GWP because it allows air conditioning units to work only as hard as the indoor environment requires.

Emerson is investing nearly two-thirds of its global R&D resources on developing low-GWP and energy-efficient products, solutions and services and will continue increasing its investment in 2015 with the opening of its new global innovation center in Dayton, Ohio. The center will focus on ways to solve energy and environmental challenges affecting everything from homes to data centers.

“Beyond government directives and standards, our industry has been demonstrating stewardship that makes a difference,” Purvis said. “The scope of our new initiatives and investments in multiple channels, products and market verticals demonstrates Emerson’s leadership in environmental stewardship, efficiency and innovation. This industry as a whole also has a proven track record of collaborating with the government while working with our industry partners to determine the best sustainable practices going forward to meet growing customer demands.”
