The largest standalone building in the world was recently completed in Chengdu, Sichuan province, China. Built over three years, the New Century Global Centre is 1.7 million square metres in total floor area — four times the size of Vatican City. It measures 500 metres long by 400 metres.
Within the building, which includes offices, a university, hotels, etc. are nearly 400,000 square metres of shopping space (for comparison, West Edmonton Mall covers a gross area of about 490,000 m2).
At the centre of the Chengdu building is a 5,000-m2 artificial beach with a giant screen providing sunrises and sunsets. Other amenities include a 14-theatre IMAX cinema, skating rink and “Mediterranean” village.
