Large transportation projects dominate Canada’s 2002 Engineering Awards

The winners in the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards 2002 were announced at a dinner held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto on October 26.

The annual awards, launched 34 years ago, are the most important national mark of recognition for Canadian consulting engineering firms. They are co-sponsored by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada (ACEC) and Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine. Winners are published in the magazine’s October-November issue.

Transportation projects from across the country dominated the successes this year. The Lions’ Gate Bridge in Vancouver, a rehabilitated Canadian landmark, won the Schreyer Award, the top honour. Engineers Buckland & Taylor found a new method to replace the entire deck, piece by piece, while traffic could continue to use the vital crossing.

Awards also went to the new Sheppard subway tunnel in Toronto, the Millennium SkyTrain expansion in Vancouver and a major new highway between Fredericton and Moncton in New Brunswick.

New computer science buildings at York University in Toronto and the University of Calgary won honours for their green designs, demonstrating the growth of environmentalism in academic building design.

Structural engineers showed their inventiveness in the new tallest tower in Vancouver — One Wall Centre — which won accolades from the jury on all fronts, but particularly for its damper system that uses tanks of water at the top of the building to prevent sway.

In the water resources category, winners included a small sewage treatment plant in Creemore, Ontario, the first in the province to use membrane filtration for sewage treatment. In the Far North, Canadian consulting engineers showed their project management expertise in coordinating a massive addition to a zinc mine in Alaska.

Projects are judged by a panel of eminent engineers and winners are selected primarily for their technical innovation, but taking into account economic, social and environmental factors. The awards are run jointly by Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine and the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada/Association des ingnieurs-conseils du Canada.
