ACEC-Saskatchewan presents awards

The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK) has announced the winners of its 2014 Awards of Distinction.

The awards were handed out at an event attended by the Honourable Vaughn Solomon Schofield, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, on November 4. Three awards went to individuals, and several awards of merit were given to engineering projects.

The 2014 Brian Eckel Awards of Merit for projects went to four projects:

Buildings Category:
 WSP Canada for the 18-Bed Surgical Unit, St. Paul’s Hospital Saskatoon. WSP provided full engineering services to return the 4th floor of the 1961 wing back to its original purpose.

Municipal Infrastructure and Water Resources Category:
SAL Engineering for the Dundurn Rural Water Utility, Phase II Potable Waterline. The project consisted of approximately 345 kilometres of high density polyethylene pipe, five pump houses and other infrastructure. SAL planned and established the routing of the waterline, analyzed the system with a flow model, and provided project design, management and site services.

Bullée Consulting for the Town of Pilot Butte Centralized Water System. The engineers were hired to oversee the engineering design and construction of a centralized water system. The expanding town of 2,500 people previously relied on private wells. Over six years, nine separate construction projects were completed and now provide water to each residence and to the town for firefighting.

Studies and Soft Engineering Category:
Tetra Tech for the Pilot Butte Interchange Functional Planning Study. Completed for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, the study identified future interchange requirements for access routes off the Trans Canada Highway to Pilot Butte. The province is undertaking improvements of the corridor east of Regina to address safety and operational concerns for commuters.

A Certificate of Recognition in this category also went to Stantec Consulting for the Global Transportation Hub. The intermodal facility is part of the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor initiative, which is being developed and administered by a crown corporation on 800 hectares of land. Stantec is the owner’s engineer, community planner and project manager.

Individual Awards:

The Lieutenant Governor presented the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Meritorious Achievement Award to Milt Walker, P. Eng. Walker is president and chief executive officer of Walker Projects.

Jaclyn Donald, E.I.T., of Clifton Associates, won the 2014 Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK) Young Professional Award.

The Brian Eckel Memorial Scholarship Award was presented to University of Saskatchewan environmental engineering student Alyssa Kimber.
