University of Manitoba creates LGBT engineering scholarship

The University of Manitoba has created its first scholarship for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) engineering students.
The scholarship is being provided by U of M alumnus Jeff Kushner nd his partner Randall McGinnis. It was approved by a university senate committee on June 24
Self-declared LGBT students who are enrolled full-time in engineering studies are eligible. They must also have completed 36 credit hours towards their degree, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and have displayed leadership skills with an emphasis on community service.
Kushner graduated in mechanical engineering and served as president of the university’s studen union in 1985.
In an article in The Manitoban, U of M’s student newspaper, Kushner said: “I do my best to put in as much as I take out, and if circumstances permit, to put in more than I take out…. The University of Manitoba faculty of engineering provided me with much of my foundation … and now it’s my turn to return the favour.”
