Rapid Transit bridge wins B.C. Lieutenant Governor Award

Consulting Engineers of British Columbia gave out its 19th annual awards at a gala held on Saturday, March 8 at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The most prestigious award, the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award of Excellence, went to structural engineers Buckland & Taylor for their design of the North Arm Bridge on the Canada Line Rapid Transit Line in Vancouver. The project, done for RSL joint venture, also won an Award of Excellence in the transportation category.
Awards of Excellence also went to:
– TELUS Atrium by Read Jones Christoffersen (buildings);
– Thirsk Reservoir Expansion, Dam Raising, Saddle Dam and Spillway, by Associated Engineering (B.C.) (municipal);
– Powers Creek Water Treatment Plant, Westbank Irrigation District by Earth Tech Canada (municipal);
– Sustainable Sewer Funding Model, City of Westminster by UMA Engineering (soft engineering)
Awards of Merit went to:
– Kwantlen University College Trades & Technology Centre by Bush Bohlman & Partners with Levelton Consultants and Trow Associates (buildings);
– Simon Fraser University Arts & Social Science Complex, Module 1 by Fast + Epp Structural Engineers (buildings);
– Whistler Nordic Competition Venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games by Sandwell Engineering (municipal);
– Whistler Sliding Centre for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games by Stantec Consulting with Golder Associates (municipal);
– Kicking Horse Canyon Phase II by Golder Associates with Delcan Corporation and Stantec Consulting (transportation);
– Deception Bay Wharf Rehabilitation by Westmar Consultants (transportation);
– Assessment of Geoexchange Potential for the City of Whitehorse, Yukon by EBA Engineering Consultants (natural resources, energy and industry).
– Rapid Hydropower Assessment Mode for BC Hydro and BC Transmission Corporation by Kerr Wood Leidal Associates (natural resources, energy and industry);
– Real-Time Flood Forecasting: Fraser River 2007 Freshet, Potential for Serious Flooding, by Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (soft engineering);
A Meritorious Achievement Award was given to Phil Seabrook, P.Eng., principal of Levelton Consultants of Vancouver. Seabrook has grown a five-person company he joined in 1969 to a multi-disciplinary firm of 190 employees. The award recognizes Seabrook’s significant contributions to engineering, the industry and the community. He is known for his leadership in introducing sustainable technology in concrete materials.
CEBC also presented the inaugural Young Consulting Engineer Award to recognize an individual in the first 10 years of his or her career who exhibits outstanding achievement in their field of practice, excellence in business practices and leadership in the community. Of the 15 nominees, Scott Campbell, P.Eng of R.F. Binnie and Associates was selected as the recipient of this award.

The panel of judges included John Haythorne, P.Eng, principal, Bull Housser & Tupper (chair); Bruce Barrett, P.Eng, vice-president, major projects, BC Transmission Corporation; Brenda Binnie, past president, UBCM; Scott Bradley, P.Eng, division manager, BEL Contracting; Mark Collins, vice-president, engineering, BC Ferry Services Inc.; Derek Doyle, P.Eng, executive director, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.; Darrin Heisler, AScT, president, Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of B.C.; Greg Reimer,assistant deputy minister, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources; and Dr. Spiro Yannacopoulos, director, UBC Okanagan School of Engineering.
The Consulting Engineers of B.C. represents 95 consulting engineering firms employing 6,000 individuals in the province.
