Proposals for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC) to impose much stricter registration requirements on structural engineers have been stalled.

The recommendations of a task force would have required those who act as the structural engineer of record on a building to have six years of experience, plus pass a structural engineering examination. There was so much opposition at the annual meeting this fall, the association has decided it will not have the rules in place by January 1, 2000 as planned. Instead it has decided to submit the issue for wider consultation from the engineers who would be affected.
