PEO York Chapter – Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail & vivaNext Bus York Region Projects

February 25, 2016
Markham Convergence Center (MCC), 7271 Warden Ave, Markham, Ontario

The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit Project is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects underway in North America. It is a 19 km LRT line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with a 10-kilometre underground tunnel in its central section. The Eglinton Line will connect Mount Dennis in the West to Kennedy Road in the East.

This first presentation will cover the construction methods and progress of preliminary works, including the move of tunnel boring machines, construction of launch and extraction shafts, headwalls, emergency exit buildings and cross passages along Eglinton. Our Speaker, Tibor Szekely will also share the challenges when constructing the west and east tunnels of the project.

The vivaNext Bus Rapid Transit Program in York Region represents a $1.4 billion transit investment from the Government of Ontario, and is part of Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan, a 25-year plan for an integrated and sustainable transit and transportation system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The project is being implemented by Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, in partnership with York Region.

The program involves the construction of approximately 35 kilometers of rapidways along major road corridors in York Region, such as Highway 7 and Yonge Street, inthe cities of Markham and Vaughan, and the towns ofRichmond Hill and Newmarket. The program represents an urban transformation of these corridors through the implementation of enhanced transit, bicycle facilities and wider, landscaped pedestrian boulevards. The vivaNext program has been the recipient of many awards in Canada and from the United States.
