A new hybrid automatic transfer switch for critical loads has been developed in Canada by Ascolectric Limited of Brantford, Ontario. The Solid State Transition Transfer Switch (SSTTS) has the ability to transfer critical loads with the speed of a pure static transfer switch. It also has the intrinsic current carrying capabilities of the electro-mechanical automatic transfer switch. Sub 1/4 cycle transfer times are routine, without interconnection of the power sources.

The construction of the SSTTS begins with an electro-mechanical automatic transfer switch. To this basic unit components are added to insert silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) into the power circuit.

One benefit of the switch is that the “offline” SCRs only carry load during the transfer process, giving them a longer lifespan. Also, when the SSTTS unit is used with a UPS system employing batteries, the battery burden is drastically curtailed.
