The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) released its annual U.S. salary survey last month.
As reported in IEEE Roundup on January 28, the median salary for its members in 2015 was US $133,000. The figure is 3.1% more than in 2013.
The survey was answered by 12,200 members. The typical respondent was a male in his mid-1940s, with an advanced degree and 20 years of experience.
The highest earners were in communications technology, with a median income of US $150,000. Next were those working in circuits and devices, at $143,000. The report attributed the high figure in communications as partly due to the fact that it is a growing field closely linked with R&D.
The women in the survey earned salaries that were an average of $13,635 less than those of men, but there was a substantially narrower gap of $3,000 between the genders compared to 2013.
African American IEEE member engineers’ salaries were on average $15,482 lower than those of others. The gap was $2,000 less than it was in 2013.
By way of comparison with engineers in Canada, Canadian Business listed the median salary for a software engineer in Canada in 2012 as $79,997. Click here.
And on the website www.salaryexplorer.com, the median salary for a Canadian engineer (all disciplines) is given as $74,000. Click here.
