Above: the 7,500-m2 new Arts and Social Sciences Complex 1 (ASSC1) at Simon Fraser University's campus in Burnaby, B. C. has won an Earth Award from the Building Owners and Managers Association of B. C. for its sustainability. Features include a heat-recovery system and direct-digital control for remote monitoring and controls, a 50,000 gallon rainwater cistern for irrigation, and 50% recycled steel. Designers were Busby Perkins + Will (architect), Fast + Epp (structural), Stantec (mechanical), Acumen Engineering (electrical). The building was unofficially designed to LEED Gold standard.
