A t he September 2005 annual conference of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) held in Beijing, Dr. Jorge Diaz Padilla of Mexico was elected for a two-year term as FIDIC President.
Dr. John Boyd, P. Eng. of Canada, a past ACEC Chairman, was elected Vice-President, and as such he will move into the position of President of FIDIC in September 2007. A delegation of 24 Canadians attending the FIDIC conference was on hand to congratulate Dr. Boyd on his election. More than 700 delegates from around the world participated in the conference, which is a FIDIC record.
The theme of FIDIC 2005 was “Sustainable Engineering — Global Leadership” and Dr. Boyd played the leading role in organizing the related sessions and gave an extremely well received keynote presentation on the topic.
The Beijing conference also included a series of very useful workshops on key current industry issues such as quality procurement, business integrity, the role of the consultant in design-build and risk management. In addition there were different opportunities for discussions with representatives of the World Bank and other international financing institutions on their respective procurement policies and practices.
