Consulting Engineers of Alberta Showcase Awards were held at the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton in January. Guests could put their engineering skills to the test in a paper airplane competition to raise money for the museum. Or, they could cool off at the bar, which was an airplane with a 14-foot wing span sculpted in ice.

Several projects won double honours. Techna-West Engineering won an award of excellence (international) and merit (small firm) for a fall protection safety system. Associated Engineering Industrial won an award of excellence (resource development) and merit (environmental) for the Rogers Sugar modernization in Taber.

Awards of excellence also went to: Acres International for fish screens at the Pine Coulee project, Stavely (small firm), UMA Engineering for Edmonton’s proactive combined sewer overflow long-term control plan (partnering), Stantec Consulting for the processing plant water re-use system at Lamb-Weston Potato Processing Plant, Taber (environmental), and EBA Engineering for Calgary International Airport Taxiway Juliett (infrastructure).

Merit awards went to AGRA Earth and Environmental/AGRA Monenco for the Suncor recycle water system in Fort McMurray, Keen Engineering/ Reid Crowther for Edmonton International Airport redevelopment, Techna-West Engineering for the Inland Cement plant upgrade in Edmonton, Reid Crowther for the Western Cities Partnership bridge management software, Acres International/Klohn-Crippen for the Pine Coulee offstream storage dam and diversion facilities in Stavely, SNC-Lavalin for the Athabasca terminal and pump station in Fort McMurray and for Poly Train III rail car wash in Fort Saskatchewan, AGRA Earth & Environmental for an International Training Course, integrated mine water management, and Hemisphere Engineering for the St. Joseph’s Composite High School modernization in Edmonton.
