TTC Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension

This project won the  PEO York Chapter 2016 Engineering Project of the Year award (Large Organization) . The presenters did an excellent job showcasing the project and it’s felt that our members would be interested in this important project as well.

Subways are one of the most complex infrastructure systems built today.  They require the integration of many component systems to ensure safe and reliable operations for the many thousands of people who use them each day.  The Toronto Transit Commission is in the final phase of completing the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE), an 8.6 kilometre extension of TTC’s Line 1, with six new stations starting at the new Downsview Park station, ending at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre station in York Region.

TTC’s project management team will speak about the unique challenges posed in the design and building of each of the six new subway stations, the new subway tunnels and installing and testing and commissioning of this new subway extension.

Project Director Keith Sibley, PE is a Engineer and Certified Construction Manager with over 40 years of in-depth program/project management, construction management, design, and project controls experience on highly complex projects. He managed several London Tube projects prior to coming to Toronto. He has a professional and collaborative approach to project delivery and places the core values of safety, quality, and sustainability at the heart of his definition of success for clients.

Keith is a long term Bechtel employee with continuous service since he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He has been assigned in various capacities on design, direct hire construction, and construction management projects. Positions have included design engineering, field engineering, project controls, contract administration, craft superintendent, project management, and program management roles. His experience includes work on fossil and nuclear power plants, both new construction and retrofit; underground heavy foundations; cut-and-cover, immersed tube, and bored tunnels; highways and bridges, including precast girder, post-tensioned segmental, and cable-stay; utility relocations; airport runway and terminals; railroads, subways, and stations. Keith started on this project in 2015.

TTC Director Joanna Kervin, P.Eng. of Third Party, Planning and Property has spent almost 30 years building both her management and technical expertise. Her 15 years in the private sector provides a depth of experience in assessing business needs, focusing on customer service and directing public and stakeholder involvement. Over the past decade, Joanna has worked in the public sector and has developed key strategic relationships within the civic and political administrations at the highest levels. Her results-oriented approach has led to the adoption and implementation of key initiatives at municipal, provincial and federal levels. She served a three year term as International Director for Canada on the International Board of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and as a member of the Canadian Executive Committee. She is a Past President of the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE). Her work with ITE provides a national and global view of transportation issues, a keen understanding of public policy and governance.  She received her Civil Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo and received a diploma in Public Administration at Western.
