PEO York Chapter Presents – Finding Energy Reduction Opportunities in Fan Systems

March 17, 2016
531 Atkinson Ave., Thornhill, Ontario

pic1The optimization of fan systems is almost universally regarded as one of the most fertile areas to explore when attempting to reduce a facility’s electrical energy requirements. This is because the motors that drive fans typically represent some of the largest electrical users on a site. For numerous reasons, the fan systems are often ripe for improvements. As well, it often the case that the task of optimization is straightforward and there are efficiency gains that can be made with little risk, downtime or other negative consequences.

The talk will focus on a number of aspects that are important to how fan energy reduction projects are approached:
• What are the fundamental areas where energy efficiency improvements can be made with fan systems?
• What is the methodology that should be used to realize those improvements?
• What are the fan system energy reduction techniques that have proven to be the most effective?
• What are the pitfalls of optimization and how does one avoid them?

The presentation will include examples of projects which were highly successful as well as some which failed to meet their objectives usually for reasons which in hindsight could easily have been avoided by following some basic rules.

Vern Martin P.Eng. is a senior mechanical engineer and partner in FLOWCARE Engineering Inc.; a company specializing in fan technical consulting services. He is a mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Waterloo in 1978 and has been involved with fan equipment ever since then… design engineering, sales and field service.

In recent years, he has primarily been involved in energy optimization studies and the troubleshooting of fans with performance, noise, vibration, control or failure problems.

The price to attend is $15 plus an Eventbrite processing fee.

Friends are welcome and networking encouraged!
