PEO York Chapter Presents – Design of Energy and Water Systems for Remote Communities

March 02, 2016
531 Atkinson Ave., Thornhill, Ontario

pic1Many remote communities struggle with reliable access to energy and water. One-size-fits-all systems configured from developed world technologies are often not effective as each location has their own resources, environmental characteristics, water demands, and energy needs. Designing custom systems to meet the needs of an individual location can assure good system performance, but this approach is expensive and requires expertise often beyond what is available in these remote communities.

This talk will overview work currently being conducted at the Water and Energy Research Laboratory (WERL) at the University of Toronto to help address these issues. First, the walk through overview computer-based modular design methods which are being developed to custom-tailor energy and water systems for individual communities. The methods are applied here to the design of photovoltaic reverse osmosis systems. The computer based approach uses a hierarchy of models to limit the number of design choices and then detailed optimization methods to determine the most cost effective solution while accounting for uncertainty in power sources and demands.

This talk will also detail experiences from the development and deployment of innovative water technologies for remote locations. This includes the deployment of a photovoltaic reverse osmosis system in a remote area in Mexico, the design of wind powered irrigation systems for Nicaragua, and development of a new aeration system for fish aquaculture in Vietnam and Bangladesh.

pic2Amy Bilton is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Associate Director of the Center for Global Engineering at the University of Toronto. Her research group, the Water and Energy Research Lab (WERL), focuses on developing innovative water and energy technologies and computer-based design methods. She completed her Ph.D. and M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics at M.I.T. and her B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science, Aerospace Option, from the University of Toronto. Amy has also worked as a Systems Engineer at Pratt and Whitney Canada and Honeywell Aerospace.

Friends, associates and family are welcome. Networking encouraged!

Price is $15 plus a small Eventbrite fee. Starts at 7:30PM sharp and ends around 9:30PM
