PEO York Chapter presents: Daylighting – Its Time Has Come (Again)

March 23, 2016
531 Atkinson Ave., Thornhill, Ontario

Fee: $15/pp includes refreshments

imga1For much of the past 100 years, in the built environment, we have largely turned our back on the sun. Instead we have favoured electric energy to generate light and mechanical methods to heat and cool our homes, offices, schools, hospitals and factories. Slowly, we have come to realize more scientifically what we really knew all along – that natural light and views to the outside are critical to our productivity, health and happiness.

This seminar will discuss the history of architectural design around daylighting as well as recent studies which clearly indicate the benefits of natural light. There will be an overview of the evolution of building and environmental codes which once promoted, then discouraged and now again encourage building design for good daylighting.

First LEED and now ASHRAE have taken leadership in this current direction. Local applications for daylighting design and daylight building modelling will be shown by example, including the planned renovations for the OAA headquarters in North York. There will also be discussion of the effective integration of electric and natural lighting, lighting controls and the current state of the art in daylight window technology for both new and existing buildings.
