Bisphenol A (BPA) has been formally designated to be toxic by the Canadian government.
As a result, Environmental Defence says the government will be in a better position to ban BPA in products and to regulate its discharge into the environment by industry.
The substance is already banned in baby bottles, but is still found in other products such as beverage cans and even on shopping receipts. Statistics Canada has found detectable levels of BPA in 91% of Canadians.
